Historical Society Announces 2019 Historical Research Paper Contest
$3,500 in cash prizes to be awarded
The Middletown Historical Society is conducting its third annual historical research paper competition, with papers to be submitted on or before November 9, 2019. The Board of Directors has established $3,500 to be paid in cash prize awards that will be distributed to place winners and honorable mention contestants. The Society is offering this competition to build an interest in history, and specifically Middletown history, in students; and to introduce them to the joy and satisfaction of ferreting out a story from long-forgotten facts. This year’s topic will be based on Middletown street names. What the Society will gain from this competition is accurate research into our history that will be permanently kept in our files for future researchers and visitors to our research room. Rules for the contest including topics to be chosen will be posted on our website beginning on April 1, 2019.
Last year’s top paper was written by a 7th grader, who wrote about Julius Kirk, a Middletown businessman who served in the First World War. Previous topics included persons listed on the First World War Memorial at Cochran Square and Middletonians who were engaged in the WWI war effort.
